Chapter Sixteen

Cerise

Axel leaned against the wall across from her, looking at ease.

“I’m not sorry,” he said nonchalantly.

As if her entire life hadn’t imploded since the second he had walked into her life. As if she could just be meek and fall at his knees and thank him for saving her.

Well, she didn’t need saving.

Was she grateful that Axel had shown up and that he had helped her? Yes. She wasn’t stupid. She knew she wouldn’t have been able to get out of there alive if she’d been alone. But she didn’t need saving, and it seemed to her that Axel wanted to keep her in the role of the endangered witch.

It made her furious. His words left her feeling weak and useless, which she kind of was at that moment without her magic to defend her. It was easier to lash out at Axel, who was standing right there, looking needlessly handsome, than to go after the Order of Salem. The real people responsible for this mayhem.

“You’re impossible,” she hissed at him, poking a finger into the solid wall of his chest.

Axel took her hand in his and sighed.

“You’re angry about the attack. Because you’re here, far from your family. Not because I stopped you from healing Jonah.”

“Don’t tell me what I feel,” she whispered furiously. How the fuck could he just seem to reach into her head and read her thoughts? That better not be something that shifters had as a gift.

There was no way in hell Axel could guess she hated him and wanted to fuck him all at once. Cerise could barely recognize herself in the emotions she felt for Axel.

It had to be some kind of Stockholm Syndrome.

And if she was truly honest with herself, she didn’t hate Axel. Not for real. It was misplaced anger.

Cerise walked right up to him, and she pushed against his chest, or rather, she tried. But the second she placed her palms against him, time stood still. She couldn’t breathe, or swallow, or blink. She was completely immobilized, mesmerized by the way her body was suddenly calling for Axel. Her skin tingled when they were connected, even if it was through the material of his shirt. Cerise could have sworn that she could feel his rippling muscles even though he was also holding his breath.

His hands came up to hers, and he gently rubbed the soft side of her wrists, his blue eyes smoldering into her own.

“Cerise.” Her name on his lips was a question.

She didn’t know what to do, but she knew that she didn’t want to move from this embrace. Not just then, anyway. She needed a few more moments to understand what was happening.

Her brain must have misfired because the next thing she knew, Cerise was standing on the tips of her toes and placing her lips against Axel’s in a soft kiss.

It was a shock.

What am I doing? her head kept asking her.

Giving into what we want, her heart answered.

Because really, something was happening.

It sparked all around them almost like magic.
